I have no idea what the point of this trailer was? Was it to showcase that Agent 47 is an unstoppable badass? Thanks trailer, but that fact was already established 10-years ago when I played Hitman 2: Silent Assassin. I don’t think the trailer is “evil” in the sense that it glorifies violence and objectification of women, sexual deviancy has long been a running theme of the series, and violence is the mortar that holds the game’s universe together. No, this just seems like pandering to the 13-year old demographic who won’t be able to buy the game by themselves to begin with. I’ll reserve accusations that the game is going to have lost all pretense of its core gameplay until I’ve actually played it myself, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s more cover-based shooting and regenerating health.

A Thought On Zombies

So after a good week of everyone joking about the start of the zombie apocalypse (man eating another man’s face, shot by police in Miami), and other seemingly bizarre news stories ostensibly linked (like the man in Baltimore throwing his entrails at the police), it seems the public’s ever growing fascination with zombies is going to reach an all-time high. And… I’m kind of fucking sick of it.

Zombies were, at a time, only really admired and loved by fans of gory horror movies, and other subcultures that shared some parallels. Certain musical subgenres like punk rock and heavy metal shared an interest, particularly death metal, which in its infancy was all about overly grotesque lyrics that took inspiration from iconic scenes from zombie movies. Hell, even in the 1985 movie The Return of the Living Dead the usual mixed group of unlucky high school/ college young people to be brutally savaged by the paranormal were swapped out for a group of punks partying it up in a graveyard, in an effort that wasn’t just aiming at the aesthetic of the culture. Then, like all the other horror subgenres, zombies mostly fell out of favor in the ‘90’s, to be replaced with either PG-13 horror films, or crappy glib self-aware “satire” of the genre in question.

So when did zombies come back into favor? My money would be around 2004 when Zack Synder’s remake of Dawn of the Dead hit theaters and merged the new fast zombies seen in 28 Days Later to the more traditional cannibalistic tendencies of zombies from the past. The next year saw Romero returning to the genre to release Land of the Dead and then the next year we got the Xbox 360 game Dead Rising, which for all intents and purposes was the first true zombie game (No offense to the Resident Evil series). It was also in 2006 that we got the Max Brooks novel World War Z, which for all intents and purposes is still the greatest zombie novel and perhaps even horror novel of the 21st century. Then in 2008 we got Left 4 Dead, which now lets us experience the zombie apocalypse with three other friends and face off against fast zombies that attack in massive hordes. Then finally in 2010, we got a TV adaptation of the long running Image comic series The Walking Dead, and now could experience zombies in all five major entertainment mediums (film, literature, television, video game, music).

Despite all that, it just doesn’t seem to be enough, at least judging from the reactions of millions of people across North America last week, people were actually really anticipating a real honest to god zombie apocalypse. Of course I’m aware that many people are being facetious but in some cases it can be really hard to tell. The Internet has a habit of showing love and devotion to something far beyond the point of just normal fandom and it’s starting to seem like the lines are beginning to blur.

Case and point, bronies. At first I thought it was just your typical ironic enjoyment with the mindset of “I’m a 20-something straight male who’s watching a show marketed towards preteen girls, pay attention to me” but it’s grown into something beyond all that. The rabid cross fandom is far more than just irony and more like something resembling a kind of self-aware psychosis (perhaps that’s a little harsh but I can’t think of a better word). I can’t help but feel this same type of devotion can be applied to zombies now, and we live in a world where more recent college graduates have a fully mapped out survival plan for zombies, but not one for the real world.

Look, I get the escapist fantasy involved, hell I enjoy a fair amount of escapism myself, be it in the form of the five aforementioned mediums, or table top RPG’s, or even chemically induced (although not bath salts, obviously), but as Yahtzee once put it “You may feel like the zombie apocalypse would give you a new lease on life, but we all know you’d start talking suicide packs if the internet went down for more than a week”. What is it that makes this apocalypse so appealing? Is it the thought of being able to kill things that strongly resemble humans but aren’t technically humans in a consequence free environment? And if so does that not strike anyone else as rather… psychotic? I’m not immune to this, back in my lumberyard days I use to fantasize about what it would be like to crush zombies with a 16 foot pack of 2x4’s as I drive around in my forklift, but I was 16 at the time and at any given situation my mind was either thinking about violence or tits.

I know my generation kind of has a phobia of growing up, and that it’s kind of hard when pop culture insists on selling us back the iconography of our childhood, but this obsession with zombies needs to end, because it passed the point of ridiculousness and has just moved into the realm of exploitation. Ravenous fans who are willing to spend $15 on a reinterpretation of Pride & Prejudice because there’s a small zombie sub plot slotted in (and inadvertently invent a new subgenre of classic reinterpretations that’s hopefully in its 14th minute of fame), or spend $60 on an expansion of Yakuza 4 because there’s zombies and a horrible shooting mechanic crowbared in. It’s at the point where we’ll just buy it because it says “zombies” in the title. We’ve become the very same mindless consumer movies like the original Dawn of the Dead were warning us against. Not only that but this obsession is starting to ruin the trope, much like how games like Call of Duty are ruining the First-Person-Shooter genre by over saturating the market. I use to love zombie films, but now I can barely stomach watching them because I’ve turned what was once a once in a while treat into a routine. This isn’t some “I hate them because they’re popular now” thing, this is a “I hate them because I can’t escape them” thing.

I do always keep this in mind and I think the best way to think about it is to consider Christianity in terms of fandom, because really, Christianity is just one really big, really old fandom; in every fandom, there are the crazies, and there are the moderates. The crazies are the ones who want EVERYONE TO FOLLOW CANON. GOD HELP THOSE WHO DON’T FOLLOW CANON. AND GOD HELP YOU IF YOU DON’T AGREE WITH ME. The moderates are the ones who believe canon is not the end all and think everyone has their right to their opinion regarding the fandom’s source material. And the moderates experience secondhand shame when they witness the behavior of the crazies because they are in the same fandom, so people outside the fandom who are looking in will just assume that everyone in the fandom acts that way.

Don’t get me wrong, I believe it’s up to the moderates to distance themselves from the extremists, to call them out for their distorted views and do their duty to show others that they’re not all like the Westboro Baptist Church. Sometimes I think the other side (i.e. Atheists) tend to think of religion in far too binary terms, and as such have just simplified it into an “I’m right you’re wrong” argument, which is exactly the same argument religious people tend to use. I think that simplification is dangerous and leads to kind of tunnel vision that completely blinds you from even empathizing with the other side, see also Democrat vs. Republican. It’s almost like we’ve turned everything into a sport, my team versus everyone.

What the people at Missiongathering Christian Church is exactly what Christians need to start doing, but I also think the other side needs to be willing to at least give them the benefit of the doubt before lumping a family that goes to Church every Sunday in the same category as the fuckwads that protest funerals.

I’d also like to point out that I’m not religious and have never been to church in my entire life.

Ulver - Childhood’s End

Ulver are one of those bands I love to talk about because there’s so much to say. Coming out around the same time as Norwegian Black metal bands like Mayhem and Burzum were grabbing headlines, Ulver released their debut album Bergtatt - Et eeventy i 5 capitler, which translates to “Taken into the Mountain - A Fairy Tale in 5 Chapters”. It was a surprisingly melodic, yet powerful album, combining elements of traditional Norwegian folk music and imagery of the troll folklore. So what do they follow it up with, why an entirely acoustic folk album that has some of the most haunting acoustic melodies I have ever heard and give you MAJOR points if you bring it up in conversation with other folk musicians. Then back to black metal for a pretty good follow up that was rumored to have been recorded in the forests of Norway, then a more experimental rock album focused around William Blake’s book The Marriage of Heaven and Hell in 1998. Then two years later… a motherfucking electronic album!

I felt that little story of their first 7-years (yes, they did all that in just 7-years) was required to give you some context and to understand that when a band like this decides to cover and reinterpret a bunch of ‘60’s psychedelic pop/rock songs, you know it’s coming from genuine musical geniuses. I cannot recommend this album enough, it has been on constant rotation throughout the week and is easily one of my favorite albums of the year.

Torchlight

So in lieu of neither my desktop nor laptop being up to the task of running Diablo 3 I decided to install Torchlight, a game that is more or less the original Diablo if it had a more World of Warcraft color scheme.

The game was alright, there wasn’t really much of a story other than “keep going deeper until you hit the final level” and on easy and normal difficulty the game is a cake walk. There’s only three other quest givers which just give you the same quest again, but in a dungeon crawler there’s really only one option, and that’s more violence.

I opted to play as a rogue, mostly because I’m playing a Thief right now in my current D&D game and I figured I may learn some insight to help give my mediocre character some kind of advantage. Sadly if my D&D character were to ever meet Nymeria he’d walk away so full of holes you’d think he slept in an iron maiden. One thing I noticed during my play through as the ranged class is that the game is pretty frugal with what it gives you. I was picking up loads of awesome swords and staffs, but whenever I found a bow, rifle, or pistol it was always far less powerful than what I was already carrying.

I honestly don’t remember much about the game, which is kind of scary considering Steam says I played it for 14-hours. The game kind of put me in a trance, where I was just clicking my mouse buttons with no real care for what I was doing. It may sound like I’m down on the game, but I’m really not, it was colorful, nicely varied, and cartoonishly gory. From what I’ve read on the upcoming sequel, it’s going to take a more Diablo II approach with acts and an actual story, so perhaps that will tickle my fancy a bit more, but if you’re into dungeon crawlers… then you’ve probably already played this game.

So a few days ago I prematurely admitted defeat with Archbang, but after I thought about all the work I put into getting my hard drive partitioned I decided I would learn. A few YouTube videos and some Wiki articles later I definitely like it. I’m still loving Crunchbang on my desktop.
